Residential Types of Roofs

Residential roofing may seem like a simple chore, but it’s not always as easy as it sounds. One of the most complex parts of any residential roofing project is choosing the best roofing material for the project. There are so many types of roofs from asphalt to metal, wood, and composite materials. Given all of these choices, to know the best residential roof type to choose for your project, you need to understand the pros and cons of each roof type.

Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt has a reputation as the most widely used residential roofing type. Its popularity can be attributed to the ease of installation of asphalt shingles and the fact that it is an economical roofing option. They are also relatively durable and they come in a wide range of styles and colors. Asphalt roofing is also suitable for a wide range of temperatures and a reliably water-resistant. You can expect your asphalt roof to last for as much as 15 to 20 years.

Ceramic Roofing Tiles
If durability is a top priority for you, then ceramic roofing might be an ideal choice. When properly installed, you can expect your ceramic roofing to last for as long as 5 to 7 decades with only minimal maintenance. They are installed in a way that efficiently keeps rainwater out. However, this roofing type is more peculiar to homes with a specific architecture especially homes that borrow some of their elements from Spanish building designs. However, while ceramic roofing tiles are quite durable under normal conditions, they are fragile and can be damaged by high winds and storms.

Wood Shakes And Cedar Shingles
For homeowners that are looking for roofs that are suitable for all-weather, cedar, or wooden shakes roof is a great choice to consider. But what they are mostly known for is their resistance to UV damage and harsh weather condition like thunderstorms and hurricanes. In addition to storm-resistant, cedar also acts as an insulator and this can help reduce cooling and heating cost in your home.
This roof type is also considered eco-friendly. It is possible to use recycled wood or responsibly harvested wood for this purpose. This roof type can serve your needs for as least 30 years which makes it such a solid investment. On the flip side, this roof type is difficult and is best installed by an expert roofing contractor.

Metal Roofing
In recent times, metal roofing has become increasingly popular. They are durable, high quality, and require very minimal maintenance. Metal roofs can be made from steel and aluminum material. This roof type is a high-end option as far as installation is concerned. But since they don’t need much maintenance, metal roofing is a cost-effective option in the long run. If the roof ever starts to lose its shine but it remains structurally intact, it can simply be painted to restore its cool look which is a lot cheaper than simply changing it entirely.
